A Canadian attends an Indian wedding, and is intrigued by the banana leaf plate and the bare-chested priest

Music in the air. Flowers everywhere. Women in colorful saris, well-dressed men, kids playing around. As soon as I got out of the car, I knew this would be a special day. I have attended several weddings in Canada. But this was the first time I was invited to an Indian wedding.

I tried to enter the main hall with the group I was with, but was stopped by Indian hospitality. "Breakfast, breakfast first," we were told. I tried to protest saying I just had breakfast, but ended up sitting by a long table. A banana leaf appeared in front of me. Then a waiter dressed in white got a bit impatient with my inaction. "Wash, wash," he told me.

I finally understood I had to wash the leaf with water because it would be my plate. Sorry my friend! In the cold country I live in, tree leaves are so small that if you would try to use them as plates in a wedding, you would end-up with a riot of underfed guests.

But there was no risk of being underfed at this wedding. What seemed like an endless army of waiters started to pass one by one, pouring all kinds of colorful food on my banana leaf.

The Great Rath Yatra 2010 chariot festival of Orissa is known as Puri Car Festival 2010. Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra Sevas Schedule and Rath Yatra wishes as Rath Yatra 2010 great chariot festival of Orissa or Puri Car Festival 2010 is today on July 13, 2010. Ratha Yatra/Jatra is a huge Hindu festival associated with Lord Jagannath held at Puri in the state of Orissa, India. The festival is also known as Gundicha Jatra, Ghosa Jatra, Navadina Jatra, Dasavatara Jatra and by a variety of other names.

Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra Sevas Schedule or Timetable On July 13, 2010:

* Mangal Aarti – 4 am
* Mailam – 4.25 am
* Rosha homam and Surya puja – 6 am
* Gopal Vallabh Darshan – 7 am
* Pongal naivedya – 7.10 am
* Rath pratishta = 8.45 am
* Pohandi utsav – 9.30 am
* Pohandi ends – 12’0 clock
* King of Puri Divyadev singh arrives in Palki or Palanquin – 1 to 1.30 pm
* Cherapahara and Mangal Aarti – 1.45 to 2.30 pm
* Tying of horses to Rath or chariots – 3 to 3.15 pm
* Rath Yatra starts and leaves to Gundicha Temple – 3.30 pm

Rath Yatra or Ratha Jatra is the massive Chariot Festival of Lord Jagannath celebrated at the Sree Jagannath Temple with a great zeal and religious fervor in the holy land of Puri in Orissa, India. Celebrated to honor Lord Jagannath (Lord Krishna), the presiding deity of Puri, this remarkable Hindu Car Festival lasts for around eight to ten days. Puri Ratha Yatra is the grand culmination of a series of festivities, celebrated on the second day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashada (June – July), the fourth month in the traditional North India Hindu calendar. In 2010, Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra commences on the 13th July 2010 (Tuesday) and Return Car Festival Bahuda Jatra (Bahuda Yatra) on 21st July 2010 (Wednesday).

During the annual Rathyatra, the three deities – Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Goddess Subhadra, with the celestial wheel Sudarshana, are taken out from the temple in a ritual procession to their respective chariots. The huge decorated chariots are drawn by millions of devotees to the Puri Gundicha Temple, situated about 2 km from Shree Jagannatha Temple. This festival is also known as Gundicha Jatra, Ghosa Jatra, Navadina Jatra and Dasavatara Jatra. The deities return to their abode after a stay for seven days.

The Chariots used for Jagannath Rath Yatra

Every year, the three chariots of Balarama, Subhadra and Lord Jagannath are newly built. Lord Jagannatha’s Chariot, called Nandighosa, is forty-five feet high and forty-five feet square at the wheel level. Its sixteen wheels are decorated with a cover made of red and yellow cloth.

Taladhwaja, the Chariot of Lord Balarama, is forty-four feet and has a Palm Tree on its flag. It has fourteen wheels which are covered with red and blue cloth. The Chariot of Subhadra is known as Dwarpadalana. It is forty-three feet high with twelve wheels and is decked with a covering of red and black cloth. Black color is traditionally associated with Shakti and the Mother Goddess.

There are nine Parsva devatas found around each of the chariots. These are painted wooden images representing different deities on the chariots’ sides. All the chariots are attached to four horses which are of different colors. White colors for Balarama, dark ones for Jagannatha, and red ones for Subhadra. A charioteer called Sarathi.is there for each chariot.

How to reach Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra Festival Location

By Flight: Biju Patnaik Airport at Bhubaneshwar, about 60 km away, is the nearest airport to reach Jagannath Temple.

By Train: Puri Railway Station is well connected with all the major cities of India.

By Road: Puri is well connected with other major towns and cities in India. Puri Bus Station is about 1 km from the Puri Railway Station. Regular buses connect Puri to Konark, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Taptapani, Sambalpur, Kolkata and other nearby towns and cities.

Former Model Natasha Padbidri Commits Suicide on Subday

A Natasha Padbidri 30-year-old former model on Sunday allegedly committed suicide at her residence in suburban Versova, police said.

Natasha Padbidri, who did a few modelling assignments some years ago, hanged herself by dupatta in the bedroom of her flat in Petricorn building this afternoon.

Natasha Padbidri family owns two flats in the building, and Natasha stayed alone in one flat while family lived in the other.

According to police, her brother knocked on the door but since there was no response, police were called.
