India Nuclear's Drive Sparks Safety Fears | Nuclear Reactions, Nuclear Power, Nuclear drive sparks safety fears

http://atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/KJ27Df02.html

NEW DELHI - In hopes that nuclear power will meet its rising energy needs, India has embarked on a spending spree since a civilian nuclear deal with the United States last October removed sanctions that had long denied it access to the international atomic energy market.

India has signed agreements with an array of nations to share and access nuclear fuel and technologies since the deal was completed. The most significant have been with Russia, the US and France.

The government last week allocated sites for Russian, French and American firms to build five new light-water reactors. French firm Areva is earmarked to build a reactor in Jaitapur in Maharashtra state; Russian firms will build two plants, in Kudankulam, Tamil Nadu, and in Haripur, West Bengal; and US firms are set to build a plant in Kovvada, Andhra Pradesh, and in Chayamithi Virdi, Gujarat.

"This important announcement [of the allocation of sites] comes in welcome recognition of the trust and confidence as well as the growing partnership between our two countries," said United States ambassador to India, Timothy Roemer. He said the power plants would bring greater access to clean and affordable energy and electricity for all Indians as well as create business opportunities for India and the US.

The government has approved a total of 15 new nuclear plants to be built at eight different sites, with firms including GE Hitachi, Toshiba Westinghouse, Areva and Rosatom vying for contracts worth an estimated US$100 billion. India has notified the International Atomic Energy Agency of its plans and 14 of its reactors will come under the nuclear watchdog's ambit by 2014.

India has signed nuclear and technology deals with Namibia, Mongolia, Tajikistan, South Korea and Kazakhstan since October, and is close to signing an agreement with Canada. Argentina this month became the latest nation to sign a civil nuclear agreement after the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers' Group lifted a 34-year-old ban on nuclear commerce with India, in September, 2008.

Australia, however, has refused to supply uranium to India as Delhi remains a non-signatory to non-proliferation treaties such as the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

The chairman of the state-controlled Atomic Energy Commission, Anil Kakodkar, has announced plans to construct four 700-megawatt (MW) pressurized heavy water reactors that could run on indigenous natural uranium as well as imported low-enriched uranium. India's present capacity of electricity production from nuclear power plants is 4,120 MW, but it has targeted 20,000 MW by 2020 and nearly 65,000 MW by 2032, according to the Planning Commission's 2006 integrated energy policy report.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently said that India could increase its atomic electricity generation capacity to 470,000 MW by 2050, if new power plants and technologies were in place. This would translate into nuclear power contributing 40% of estimated total power, from 2.7% currently.

"This would not only sharply reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels but also contribute to global efforts to combat climate change," Manmohan said.

Nuclear safety
As the push for nuclear energy grows, so are the murmurs about India's nuclear safety record. Some analysts say there could be cause for alarm, given the non-transparent nature of India's state-controlled nuclear energy sector - there is no way to estimate whether safety issues will be carefully followed.

Data on the sector are closely guarded by the nuclear establishment, which functions under the purview of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).

The Indian chapter of the International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War, in a 2008 survey, found that "sterility was found to be more common in people residing near uranium mining operations." Birth defects and congenital deformities followed a similar pattern.

In the early 1990s, the Tarapur plant near Mumbai leaked radioactivity from faulty cooling systems. Incidents of genetic disorders have been recorded in populations at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan state and in the sea near Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, where nuclear power plants are located. In 2004, the Kakrapar-1 reactor in Gujarat was shut down.

In the 1990s, the former chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, A Gopalakrishnan, expressed fears about the safety status of some nuclear installations under the DAE.

Dalit Enter TN Temple First Time in 100 years | All India News

NAGAPATTINAM: For the first time in a hundred years, dalits of Chettipulam village stepped inside the local Shiva temple on Tuesday, in a historic moment brought about by government and political intervention.
Escorted by revenue and police officers, nearly 70 dalits of the village situated near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district entered the century-old Kamatchi Amman Sametha Ekambareswarar Temple at around 11 am and offered prayers for 25 minutes. Dressed in their best, women had brought flowers and other offerings. A group of non-dalits, including panchayat president V Manimaran, also accompanied the dalits. District collector C Munianathan himself distributed prasadam' to the dalits after the prayers.

It is a historic day for us. For decades, we were barred from entering the temple. All we could do for generations was to stand 10 feet away from the temple entrance and offer prayers,' said Nandan alias N Natarajan, a dalit labourer. He and other dalits were greeted by non-dalits inside the temple. CLICK HERE MORE.

Chandraayan: India Leaves its Mark on the Moon

Chandrayaan, India's solo mission to the moon, is symbolic of India's footprints on the Moon. Among the major breakthrough findings, country's first ever Moon probe, established the fact that there is water on the Moon.

Chandrayaan, India's solo mission to the Moon, is also symbolic of country's footprints on the celestial body. On the first anniversary of Chandrayaan-1 launch, we recreate the magic of India's mission to the Moon.

Among the major breakthrough findings, country's first ever moon probe, established the fact that it generates water; that there is iron in its rock like structures; and that Apollo, the US fourth mission was not hoax.

The next sequel of the moon quest then boils down to the query if Moon is fit for habitation. NASA recently bombed Moon surface and has yet to come back with detailed findings on water probe. Chandrayaan established that water on the Moon is in molecular form and not in moisture or gas form.

American Most Wanted TV Show | AMW TV Show | American Television Show

American Most Wanted TV Show | AMW TV Show | American Television Show

The American Television Show Produced bt 20th Century fox, Its the running program in the history of thr fox Television Network.

The idea for America’s Most Wanted originally came from a German show Aktenzeichen XY… ungelöst (ger. file number XY… unsolved) that first aired in 1967, and the British show Crimewatch, first aired in 1984, with the US version conceived by then-Fox executive Stephen Chao and Executive Producer Michael Linder in the summer of 1987. It premiered on February 7, 1988 on seven Fox-owned stations. Within four days of the first broadcast, FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitive David James Roberts was captured as a direct result.

After the program’s pilot aired, a lengthy search was conducted, and John Walsh was selected as the host of the show; other potential candidates included former Marine Corps Commandant General P.X. Kelly and victims’ advocate Theresa Saldana. Walsh had gained publicity after his six-year-old son, Adam Walsh, was kidnapped and murdered in 1981. Walsh and others had successfully advocated Congress for the creation of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The show began profiling missing persons, especially children, in 1991. Some of the most notorious captures include John List, the Texas Seven, and the abductors of Elizabeth Smart, Brian Mitchell and Wanda Barzee. On May 2, 2008, the AMW website announced their 1,000th capture; a New York City Realtor named Dwight Smith, who was captured more than a week earlier.

The show was canceled for a month and a half in the fall of 1996 when Fox decided to air a Saturday night sitcom block consisting of Married… with Children, Martin and two new series: Love and Marriage and The Preston Episodes. However, protests from the public, law enforcement, and government officials, including the governors of 37 states, as well as low ratings for the shows replacing AMW encouraged Fox to bring the show back. Martin and Married… with Children were moved back to Sundays. Producers rechristened the show America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back. Since this time, the AMW/COPS combination has made Saturday evening Fox’s most stable night, along with the longest unchanged primetime schedule on American television currently.

AMW Dirty Dozen

The AMW Dirty Dozen is a list of the most notorious fugitives that have been reviewed on the show that are currently at large. It is similar in function, though not identical with, the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, though four of the Dirty Dozen are on the FBI's list.

Currently there are only nine still at large on the list; the spots for Cesar Armando Laurean (captured), Emigdio Preciado, Jr. (captured), and Mark Everett (killed by police) have not been filled.

These are the current Dirty Dozen. They are in order as presented on the AMW website; the list is not ranked.

Robert William Fisher is wanted for killing his wife, Mary, and his children, Brittany and Bobby Jr., on April 10, 2001, and then burning down their house to try to cover up the crime. He is also on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He is considered to be AMW's Public Enemy Number 1.

Jason Derek Brown is wanted for killing an armored car driver and stealing $56,000 USD in front of a movie theater in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 29, 2004. He is charged in Phoenix with first-degree murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He is believed to be in either British Columbia, or Mexico.

Paul Merle Eischeid, a member of the Hells Angels, is wanted for his part in killing a woman in Tempe, Arizona, in 2001. He is charged with first degree murder. He was recently placed on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted List, and is additionally wanted for drug trafficking and RICO.

Hallow;s End Achievments

All aspiring Brewmasters, brush off your Ram riding skills and prepare for some fun. If you need a refresher on how to race those Rams, check out our Ram racing tips from last year. This will be one of your main sources of tokens, so you’ll want to make sure you’re good at it. For a quick rundown of how to get each achievement, you can read up on our Overachiever’s guide to the 2009 Brewfest.
Of course, if you’re just one to take it a bit more casually, there’s nothing wrong with that either. There’s plenty of fun to be had. If you’re heading down to Coren Direbrew’s place for a shot at a mount or trinket, be sure to check out some of the other fun stuff at the Grim Guzzler.
Also worth noting is that we should see a lot of Violet Protodrakes popping up in game today, especially with the removal of the Brew of the Year achievement. My main is a Death Knight, so I’ll have to wait for Hallow’s End, but if you were dilligent with your achievements last year, it should be pretty simple to get that drake on Sunday.
But with all that said, it’s down to the discussion. I’m interested to hear what your Brewfest plans are. Are you going to be going full bore for Brewmaster? Are you expecting to get your Violet Protodrake before Brewfest is over? Are you going to treat it a bit more casually? Are you ignoring the achievements and just focusing on Coren’s mounts? Or are you just going to stay out of the whole thing and hold a real life Brewfest of your own.

Kurnool, Mahaboob Nagar Floods In Andhra Pradesh - Thungabhadra, Krishna

There has been much anxiety over the floods situation right now in Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar, Vijayawada areas of Andhra Pradesh State.

Floods in Andhra pradesh is the hot topic every where. Already nearly 30,000 people had been trapped in the flood water. This is the first ever time in the history of Andhra that has seen such type of floods. All the reasons for this floods situation lies on several factors. The first one is the nature itself for raining drastically within 2 days a record of upto 30 centimeters and more is recorded in many of theses areas.

And additional to that, the back waters from other sources are affecting more. And also flood water from the dams present in Karnataka is also one of the problems. The authorities in AP are not able to estimate the inflow of flood water into Srisailam and Nagarjuna Dam.

Red Alert has been announced right now in Kurnool as there is a heavy inflow of the flood water from upper regions. So tonight we can see the water level increase of upto 4 or 5 feet raise in the colonies.

In spite of additional cares that the authorities are taking, people are reporting that proper help and rescues are not reached to them. Many volunteers have arrived to these regions and started to distribute food, clothes and water packets.
