Telangana Band on December 30

The joint action committee (JAC) comprising TRS, Congress, TDP, BJP and other organisations met in Hyderabad on Sunday and decided to intensify its agitation for a separate Telangana state. The JAC had given a call for a one-day bandh on December 30 in all the ten districts of Telangana region.

The JAC convener Prof Kodandaram said all the MLAs who had resigned will soon meet Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy and insist that the resignations be accepted. By this the parties wanted to create a constitutional crisis forcing the Centre for speedy action on a separate state for Telangana.

The JAC demanded that the Centre initiate constitutional process immediately for Telangana state and also fix a time-frame for completing the bifurcation of the state.

Suicide bomber kills 20 at Pakistan Ashura parade

A suicide bomber on Monday struck Pakistan's largest procession of Shiite Muslims on the holiest day in their calendar, killing 20 people and wounding dozens more, defying a major security clampdown.

The blast unleashed pandemonium in one of the biggest boulevards in the Pakistani financial capital, where angry mourners threw stones and opened fire into the air, sparking appeals from the authorities for calm.

My sister, her husband and children are dead, one mourner, weeping profusely and beating his chest as he fled the bomb site, told AFP.

Pakistan had deployed tens of thousands of police and paramilitary forces, fearing sectarian clashes or militant bombings would target the Shiite faithful who whip themselves to mourn the seventh-century killing of Imam Hussein.

It was a suicide attack. He was walking with the procession and he blew himself up, Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik told private television, appealing on the Shiite community to suspend their commemorations.

This pattern shows that this was a joint venture between Tehreek-e-Taliban and Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, Malik told Dunya television, referring to two of Pakistan's most potent Islamist militant networks.

Ambulances raced through the streets, ferrying the casualties to hospitals, where state television said medics declared a state of emergency.

At least 20 people were martyred and more than 60 wounded, provincial health minister Saghir Ahmed told AFP.

We have declared emergency at all hospitals in Karachi and doctors are making every effort to save the injured. The situation is very grim, he said.

It was the second bomb attack to mar Ashura in Pakistan after a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a main Shiite mosque in Pakistani-administered Kashmir, killing seven people late Sunday.
Fire broke out after the blast in Karachi, fanning thick smoke into the sky, and people were running in all directions, an AFP reporter said.

Two further explosions were heard, which could have been gas tanks exploding in burning vehicles, and mourners torched a bus, which had blocked off a road for the procession, witnesses said. click here for more

Ashura day 2010

The Day of Ashura, Ashoura and other spellings is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram.

It is commemorated by Shia Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (October 10, 680 AD. According to Sunni Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad fasted on this day and asked other people to fast. Sunni Muslims also celebrate the day claiming that Moses fasted on that day to express gratitude to God for liberating the Israelites from Egypt.

In some Shia countries and regions such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it. Even in India, Ashura (often called Moharram) is a public holiday.

Blast in Karachi injures 13 people | Second Blast in Karachi in 2 days

Blast in Karachi injures 13 people | Second Blast in Karachi in 2 days

This was second such incident in the city in two days. Although bomb disposal personnel said the blast had not been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) but by gas from an open sewer line along the road, the crater at the place was larger than usually seen after a sewerage line bust.

“We thoroughly checked the area and found nothing which shows it’s a bomb blast,” said Capital City Police Officer Waseem Ahmed.

“The situation is quite clear but we are still investigating to strengthen our findings. The injuries were caused when construction material dumped on the roadside came down due to force of the explosion.”

But doctors at the Qatar Hospital and Abbassi Shaheed Hospital, where the injured had been taken to by residents, ambulances of charity organisations and also by law-enforcement personnel, found splinter wounds on their bodies.

“The wounds appear to have been caused by a bomb blast,” said Dr Mashhooduz Zafar Farooq, medical superintendent at the Abbassi Shaheed Hospital.

“We received seven people who had suffered minor injuries. They were discharged after necessary treatment.”

Officials at Qatar Hospital in Orangi Town, where 27 injured people had been treated, were of the same opinion.

The 27 injured included two boys nine to 10 years old and three policemen,” said one of the officials.

One policeman was taken to the Abbassi Shaheed Hospital because he required a minor head surgery which we couldn’t do here, but he was out of danger.”

Violence erupted in Qasba and Ali Garh areas after the blast and dozens of charged youths took to the main road chanting slogans against the government, blaming it for what they called its failure to make adequate security arrangements.

While police maintained calm and tried to persuade the protesters to disperse, some people set on fire two taxis and another vehicle parked in the area.

At least 19 people, including six children, have been injured in a car explosion during a mourning procession of Shia Muslims commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH).

The injured, including security personnel, have been transferred to the Abbasi hospital where doctors reported that one child and one woman were in a critical condition.

According to eyewitness reports, a car broke through security and stopped close to the mourning crowd while a man rushed out of the car and ran. Seconds later there was a big blast.

Abdul Rauf, an official from the bomb disposal squad in Karachi, said the blast destroyed the car and left a small crater on the road at Khilafat Chowk in Paposh Nagar in Pakistan's commercial city, Karachi.
