Victoria refuses to release details of attacks on Indians

Admitting that statistics of the attacks on Indians in Australia were problematic, Victorian police chief Simon Overland has refused to release the details saying it could be misinterpreted.

Overland refused to release the statistics on the grounds that they are “subjective and open to interpretation”.

He said information about a victim’s race was based on a subjective assessment of their appearance — and Indians were included in the broad category of “south Asian appearance”. Such a category could also include those from countries other than India such as Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, he said.

“The problem with putting the data out there is that it will be misunderstood and we see this all the time,” he was quoted as saying in the The Age newspaper on Thursday.

Mr. Overland has earlier commented that Indians were over-represented as victims of robberies which was different than Victorian premier John Brumby who said “assaults on Indian students are under-represented in terms of population share“.

Mr. Overland said his comments were based on police intelligence which relied on data that was “problematic”. Because information about crimes affecting a particular racial group was based on a subjective assessment of the victim’s appearance the data was used only for internal purposes, he said.

Mr. Overland also said he regretted telling Indian students to “try and look as poor as you can” to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

Mahashivaratri Puja Time in 2010

Shiva (pronounced Sanskrit: Śiva; IPA: meaning "Auspicious one"), is a major Hindu deity, and one aspect of Trimurti. In the Shaiva tradition of Hinduism, Shiva is seen as the Supreme God. In the Smarta tradition, he is regarded as one of the five primary forms of God.

Followers of Hinduism who focus their worship upon Shiva are called Shaivites or Shaivas (Sanskrit Śaiva). Shaivism, along with Vaiṣṇava traditions that focus on Vishnu and Śākta traditions that focus on the goddess Shakti are three of the most influential denominations in Hinduism.

Shiva is usually worshipped in the abstract form of Shiva linga. In images, he is generally represented as immersed in deep meditation or dancing the Tandava upon Maya, the demon of ignorance in his manifestation of Nataraja, the lord of the dance.

Mahashivaratri Puja :

Maha Shivratri (Night of Shiva or "Great Night of Shiva") is a festival celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day in the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the month of Maagha (as per Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama) or Phalguna (as per Vikrama) in the Hindu Calendar (that is, the night before and day of the new moon). The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael (Bilva) leaves to the Lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil. Ganja is traditionally used as an offering for Lord Shiva and his followers.

Per scriptural and discipleship traditions, the penances are performed in order to gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach the goal more swiftly and avoid rebirth.

TCS Official Website Hacked

Tata Consultancy Services official website www.tcs.com has been attacked and hacked. The hacker has left a message suggesting the website is up for sale.

At the time of writing of this post if you visited the official url of TCS, www.tcs.com; this is message you are greeted with. Click for more

Strangely the hacker has put up a email Id out there in case someone is interested in buying the domain.

It is probably unrelated but there has been a rise in official websites being hacked into with messages. This is known as defacing homepages. Only recently Indian government had admitted that China based hackers had attacked official computers. But those were more sophisticated and meant to attack computer systems rather than deface any websites.
DNS Attack?

It seems TCS is facing DNS attack of some kind as the homepage opens fine with Pagewash. Here is a video to explain.

NTPC’s FPO floor price fixed at Rs 201 a share | NTPC FPO Further Public Issue

NTPC’s FPO floor price fixed at Rs 201 a share | NTPC FPO Further Public Issue

The Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) has fixed the floor price for the proposed follow-on-public offer (FPO) of the state-run National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Rs 201 per share. The minimum bid lot will be 28 equity shares and in multiples of 28 shares thereafter. The issue will be open for subscription between February 3 (Wednesday) and February 5 (Friday).

The eligible employees of the company, who will be submitting their bids in the Employee Reservation Portion, will get a discount of Rs 10 per share in the offer.

The government is looking to offload its 5% stake in the largest power utility of the country through this issue. Following this issue, the government’s stake in the company will come down to 84.5% from current 89.5%.

The floor price fixed by the government is way below the earlier expectations of around Rs 265 a piece. The move may be influenced by the last month’s correction in the equity markets and tepid response from investors to the recent initial public offerings (IPOs) of state-owned, NHPC and Oil India.

Though most of the analysts have sounded the issue attractive, investors have given thumps down to the company’s share in trade.

Last month, the company commissioned the coal based Unit-5, having 490 megawatt (MW) capacity, of its National Capital Thermal Power Project situated at Dadri, Uttar Pradesh (UP). With the commissioning of this unit, the total installed capacity of the company has now crossed 31000 MW and has become 31134 MW.

NTPC’s net profit for the December 2009 quarter jumped by 5.07% to Rs 2,364.98 crore from Rs 2,250.91 crore for the corresponding previous quarter.
